Project 3: Light

Research Topic: The Unity Temple

Objective

In project 3 students were tasked to create a theoretical chapel on Farmingdale state colleges campus. After researching our campus and analyzing the components that make up our campuses public spaces and circulation paths, we had to choose a location to place our design and integrate it into the existing public space chosen. The chapel was to consist of  3 chapels, 1 large chapel and 2 smaller chapels that would be used as a non-religious gathering space for students and office staff to use while still obtaining a spiritual atmosphere. Office spaces would also be needed to be included in the design for meetings, and faculty private spaces. Each chapel would use the manipulation of natural light being captured from different direction using the suns seasonal path in the sky.

Interior Renders

Interior view of light cannon in lobby area. Light cannon is covered by louvers that help keep the light dim while also keeping the space bright enough during the day where no artificial light will even be needed

Interior view of light in the meditation chapel. This smaller chapel uses light in a sense that feels spiritual and bright while still bending light around the room naturally. The right side wall is a perfect spot to display something special to campus dwellers as it is in the focal point of the light

Interior view of light in the memorial chapel. Serving as a chapel to host guests who would like to honor and appreciate something near and dear to them. This chapel has enough space to hold memorabilia and/or memorials to events or people in wish students wish to remember.

Interior view of light in the main chapel. This is the largest chapel in the building as suits as a meeting space for services that can host a decent amount of guests. To the left is the entrance to an additional room in the form of a tower that also has its own lighting properties (Below image)
